The Ruby Crowned Kinglet, Regulus calendula is a sparrow-sized songbird that displays jumpy, nervous-like habits. The male has a bright ruby-red (hence the name) crown of feathers that normally stays hidden. The male raises these feathers, displaying the bright red 'crown' when excited or alarmed. The Ruby Crowned Kinglet has an olive green colored body with a white wing bar and white eye ring. They forage across the ground for small insects such as spiders and ants. The Ruby crowned Kinglet usually nests in higher branches of tall trees.
