About the area
This polder is part of the Natura 2000 areas. A European network of protected natural areas. In these Natura 2000 areas, certain animals, plants and their natural habitats are protected to preserve biodiversity (species diversity).
In Vlijmens Ven, the area where we are now, very well-developed ditch vegetation occurs here. These include wreath weed communities, Water Soldiers and Pondweed vegetation and Bank weed vegetation. The occurrence of these vegetations is mainly due to the strong inflow of seepage water.
Underground seepage water flows from the sand ridge on which the Vughtse Heide and the Loonse and Drunense Dunes lie. This water of good quality .
The larva of this species first feeds on Sanguisorba officinalis (great burnet), then moves onto ant nests and is a predator of the ant brood. Myrmica rubra and Myrmica scabrinodis have been reported as frequent host ant species.
The rare Bewick's Swan can be seen in this area from late September to late March. They winter mainly on grasslands and fields. These swans breed on the arctic tundra along the Barents Sea and further east. The population has declined in recent years.
Raptors like Buzzard, Eurasian Hobby and Eurasian Sparrowhawk thrive in the inaccessible swamp forests of the adjacent Marshes and partly seek their food in surrounding fields and the adjoining city. Woodpeckers, including Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Eurasian Green Woodpecker, breed in the older parts. This is also an ideal area for many songbirds and nest in the marshy parts. The Canada goose has settled in. It is now a little too successful because it has established itself in the western residential areas of the city with 500 pieces and is causing a lot of poop nuisance there. Kingfisher, Great Yellow Wagtail and Great Egret are here during migration and in winter. In winter, the surrounding fields are an important foraging area for (thousands of) geese and swans. Particularly Greylag Goose, Reed Goose (both Taiga and Tundra Goose), Lesser Swan, Wild Swan and sometimes Barnacle Goose and Red-necked Goose are observed during this time.
