Well is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland, located on the north side of the Meuse River.
Well originated in the early Middle Ages on a mound (also called woerd) and has known several spellings in the Middle Ages, such as Wele and Welle. In 1247 the convent of Mariënweerd sold their property called Vene in the kerspel “Wele” to the convent and church Bethlehem in Doetinchem. A kerspel is a village with its own church. The church tower dates from the 12th century. The church building itself dates from the 16th century.
Well lies on the Meuse River at a height of 2 meters in the river clay area of the Bommelerwaard.
